On the 22nd of April, Scarlett and I began shooting for the first time for the music video!
Aligning with the typical mis-en-scenes of pop-ballad music videos being shot in a studio, we were lucky enough to do the same! I think this was really beneficial as due to the professional setting, we were not only able to take some videos but also some photos to potentially use on eg. The website.
Beforehand, I watched the official music video for ‘When We Were Young’ By Adele, and paying homage to this Scarlett decided to wear a formal dress and heavy makeup. I also think this made our shoot more dramatic and mature, aligning with the target audience of “primarily 16-25 year olds” that are “middle and up market”.
Remaining aware of the brief (“style-conscious people”), I ensured to bring with me to the studio a few iconic Vogue Issues to use as props in the videos and photos:
- Keira Knightley’s October 2007 Issue:
I thought this older issue would be great to appeal to the older audience (eg. The “25” year olds). It could also be a great intertextual reference to “style-conscious” watchers as it is arguably a rarer, older Issue from Vogue, that they may recognise.
- Adele’s November 2021 Issue:
Another great opportunity for an intertextual reference?
I am unsure on this inclusion as I don’t know that I could include Adele as she is the original singer of my music video, but undeniably she has pathed the way for pop-ballads as a whole.
- Edward Enninful’s Final Edition, March 2024 Issue:
This iconic issue featuring 40 iconic women and former cover stars celebrating Ennifuls final Issue being editor-in-chief seemed like a perfect Issue to include to further reflect the target audience and also reinforce a sense of femininity and celebration of woman-hood. All women included are of different ages, ethnicities and so much more, and I thought to include this Issue would be a great intertextual reference to the deeper meaning behind my music video (being a woman and growing up with a love interest).
- Tyla’s March 2025 Issue:
Due to its recency in release, I thought this Issue would be a suitable feature to enhance my music videos relevancy.
Furthermore, Tyla is 23 years old herself (born in 2002), therefore fitting into my target audience… I then would infer that her fans are around her age - in my target audience too!
Tyla has also made a huge impression recently on social media, further attracting my target audience who I infer (like me), are digitally native and aware of current trends and rising celebrities.
- Vogue Jewellery Book
A book featuring jewellery throughout the ages to further reinforce the “style conscious” audience.
For this test shoot, I filmed on both my camera and my phone to compare quality and decide what I’ll use for future filming.
I found that the footage from my camera appeared more professional due to its higher resolution, which I preferred overall.
However, I was drawn to the lower lighting captured on my phone, as it gave the video a raw and emotional feel that I also really like.
I experimented with a variety of shot types and then edited the clips together using Final Cut Pro, carefully syncing Scarlett’s lip movements to the overlayed track.
I am really pleased with the result!
While the final music video will not feature continuous studio shots of Scarlett singing – since I am focusing more on a narrative storyline – these performance clips will be integrated throughout.
This test shoot has made me feel more confident and prepared for future filming.
